You have taken away all Your wrath; You have turned from the fierceness of Your anger – Psalm 85:3
In the Old Testament, God’s people, the Israelites, sacrificed animals to cover their sins. They did this daily and once a year on the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16:1-34). They had to make sure their sins were covered otherwise they would face God’s wrath and anger. Now, Animal sacrifices could not take away sins… they simply covered them. Hebrews 10:4 says, “it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.” Since God instituted animal sacrifices to cover sins, then only He could make a way to take away sins.
And He did just that… “John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!’” (John 1:29). Jesus Christ, took the place of an animal, a lamb, and offered Himself as a sin offering from God for the whole world. The Father’s wrath and fierceness came upon His only Son, Who suffered, bled and died on a cross on Calvary’s mountain. His blood was spilled for our sins.
Today, when you sin, God does not look at you with wrath and anger. Instead, He remembers His Son’s sacrifice and looks at you with love. He says, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Accept Jesus Christ as your sacrifice for all your sins.
27 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
Matthew 26:27-28
