Hear and Understand

When He had called the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear and understand” — Matthew 15:10

Jesus had taken Peter, John and James up on a mountain to pray. And as He prayed, His face was altered and His robe became white and glistening. Then Moses and Elijah appeared, and talked with Him. When the two men were departing, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” (Luke 9:33) While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them and a voice from the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!” (Luke 9:35) The disciples fell face-down to the ground, terrified. After Jesus touched them, they looked up and saw no one except Jesus.

Our Heavenly Father wants us to listen only to His Son, Jesus, Who is the Word of God. The more we hear His Word, the more faith will increase in us. For faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. So, it is important that we don’t just hear the Word once but hear it over and over again.

This is a lifestyle for the believer

As hearers, we also need to understand God’s Word. When a person does not understand the Word that he or she hears, the devil can snatch that which was sown in his or her heart. Jesus said in Matthew 13:19, “When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart…” So when you hear God’s Word, ask the Father to explain it to you. Ask Him to give you a hearing and understanding heart. The more time you spend in God’s Word, the more you will come to know Him through the Holy Spirit and be like Him.
